Chez Meme Baguette Bistro – My New Favorite Place To Eat in Kihei, Maui

Chez-Meme-Baguette-Bistro-Maui_edited-1

I first heard about Chez Meme Baguette Bistro from my friend Jon when he liked their Facebook page. A proof that social media does help spread the word quickly about a new biz. I liked their FB Page too and saw the many compliments they are getting from the people who’s been there.

Today my family went there for a brunch and it was delightful! The food are delicious and the ambience is wonderful! The location, although a bit “off the beaten path” is really easy to find.

Chez Meme Baguette Kihei Maui

We arrived around 9:45 am and place is already filled with many people eating breakfast.  It didn’t feel crowded even though there are only two tables left open inside and we occupied one of them. The lay-out of the place is well done.  I took the photo above after the customers left because I didn’t want them to be concern that some crazy lady is taking a photo of them while they are eating :)

There are so many nice things I can say about this new restaurant but let’s focus on the food for now. Like what I said, they are delicious! And the price is right too.  There is a variety of choices in the menu and it took me a little while to choose because all of the sounds good.  For example, there is that famous French Toast Trio made from fresh baked Brioche or that omelet made from fresh free range chicken eggs.  Ahhh, choices, choices!  Here is what we ended up ordering and we cleaned up our plate pretty fast!

Chez Meme Bistro Maui 2

Hubby ordered the Eggs Benedict, a special for Sunday Brunch.  And yes, the eggs used are fresh and from a free range chicken. Doesn’t that photo look good? It tasted great too!

Lunch in Kihei Chez Meme

Hapa Boy Teenager 1 ordered  Jarret, it’s a baguette sandwich with black forrest ham, brei cheese, and Dijon mustard.  It’s savory  garlicky flavor is perfect for him. He loved the potatoes on the side too.

Chez Meme Brunch Omelet

Hapa Girl Teenager 2 had the Omelet filled with bacon and cheddar. Like what we say in Hawaii, “broke da mouth” ono!

Chez Meme Baguette Bistro

Last but not the least is my order. It is called From ‘ton – a baguette sandwich with brie, warmed pears and toasted walnuts. It’s something different and I enjoyed every bite of it. This is a good choice for vegetarians coming to this place.  It comes with the choice of Salad or Soup on the side.

Far Our Flying Saucer Tea

There are many choices for drinks too. The sun tea they serve is worth ordering. It’s made by Flying Saucer  Teas. It is certified organic herbal tea, 100% natural and caffeine free.  For those who needs caffeine to wake up in the morning, order their French Press coffee instead.

Chez meme Caramel Roll

Now for dessert. Well, we really couldn’t eat dessert anymore because we were so full, but we couldn’t resist the freshly home made caramel rolls we took some home.  They are the bomb!  It melts in your mouth and taste like heaven :)  For the sweet lovers, this is a must try.

The is one thing that my social media friends and geek friend are probably wondering. That is, “do they have wifi”? The answer is NO.  This bistro is the place to unplug, and to enjoy good conversations with your family and friends while enjoying a sumptuous meal.  Sure you can still use your Iphone and Ipad there and get connected, but why?  I think it’s refreshing to have a open air restaurant like this where you can relax and not worry about being connected in the internet.

They are open from 8AM to 3PM.  I asked the manager/owner if they will someday open for dinner is he said they will do dinners only on special occasion. The place can be reserved for private functions, such a reception for a wedding, community or office events.  I can see how it can be a great place for a wedding reception.

And so that was our family brunch. I love spending time with my family and a great brunch together on a Sunday morning like this is such a pleasure.  I am glad we got to try Chez Meme Baguette Bistro and I am sure we will be back.

Maui is Vegan Friendly, Especially in Paia

IMG_1015
One thing (among many things) that I love about Maui is its openness to diversity.  There’s the diversity of culture, and there’s the diversity of lifestyle.  That makes this island a wonderful place to live  or visit.  One of the many examples of the kind of diversity we embrace here is the preference for food, which also affectss lifestyle.  I am on the “easygoing” side and actually not very health conscious (well, not yet but I should be). I am often jonesing for ethnic Filipinos dishes, sometimes Vietnamese too.  My friend David, has  his own preference.  He likes vegan cuisine and he knows where to find the good ones in Paia.  He shared with me a post article a while back and I thought it would be nice to share this also with the readers of A Maui Blog.  I am pretty sure the  many readers (especially those who are vegan) will appreciate this post and will find this useful.  Thanks David for allowing me to post this here:

The Gluttonous Vegan’s Guide to Pa`ia, Maui, Hawai`i

Pa`ia is an old sugar plantation town on Maui’s North Shore, about 8 miles east of Kahului (site of the island’s main airport). It’s now regarded as a haven for windsurfers, artists, guitarists, peace activists, and other free spirits – and tourists looking for a good meal before or after venturing to Hana.

Pa`ia is also a vegan’s delight, offering an array of great food choices. It’s also a real town, – a walkable town – an increasingly rare and wonderful thing in Hawai`i and the rest of America.

Parking is a problem. I recommend not even trying to find parking on the street or in a store parking lot. Rather, I recommend using the free municipal parking lot on Hana Highway at the entrance to the town (coming from Kahului). Or, you could just take the Maui Bus.

Walking from the parking lot toward Baldwin Avenue, the first place I recommend visiting is Anthony’s Coffee. My regular meal at Anthony’s is a combination of brown rice, salsa, and avocado. Simple goodness! And the highly efficient kitchen staff often has it ready for me even before I’ve finished paying.

But, as the name suggests, it’s the coffee that makes Anthony’s famous. I almost always have the ultra-strong organic French roast. It’s pricey ($2+). But refills are offered at a discount. And, if you can handle strong coffee, you’ll want a refill. The soy lattes are terrific too.

Anthony’s amenities including a flat-screen TV and free wi-fi (although there are no electrical outlets). There are a lot of cool little gifts available.

David is the guy with the red polo shirt. This photo was taken during one of our MauiTweeUp at Anthony's. I agree with David, Anthony's is a cool place to hang out. I'd like to go back there again and again.

World-class athletes Gabby Reece and Laird Hamilton and their two impossibly cute (and presumably future Olympian) kids are Anthony’s regulars when they’re on the island.

Proceeding down Hana Highway, you can take a right and walk up Baldwin Avenue to Cafe Mambo. This Mediterranean-themed hotspot features free movies on Thursday nights at 9 and a plentiful selection of vegan appetizers, entrees, and side dishes. There’s a wide price range. Combine some of the inexpensive side orders, and you can end up with a full meal that’s much more affordable than some of the entrees.

Friendly service from an international staff, hearty stews, and lots of couscous are among Cafe Mambo’s guarantees.

Cafe Des Amis – Mambo’s sister restaurant – is just a little farther up the avenue. Cafe Des Amis also has a largely Mediterranean orientation, but Indian cuisine is also represented. I recommend the vegetable curry with mango chutney on the side. The coffee is also strong and tasty and will be refilled frequently, without charge. The service can be a little languid, but the wait staff is friendly and doesn’t mind gentle reminders.

There’s a crosswalk between Des Amis and Mambo that you can use to get to the other side of Baldwin Avenue and visit Pa`ia’s unofficial vegan headquarters, Mana Foods. ….(to read the complete post, go to The Gluttonous Vegan Blog. (click here))

Where Locals Eat On Maui

A couple of weeks ago I sent out a twit asking my Maui tweeter friends to let me know where they eat. I told them I am writing a blog post on “Where Locals Eat”. As expected, I got a lot of replies (gotta love Twitter). But I got busy, and have not posted anything about it. I planned to submit the “where locals eat” post to the blog carnival at Home Spun Honolulu  but didn’t happen. I was late.
The list is still in progress but I thought I should just upload it (the Spring Break visitors would benefit here). Uploading this halfway done will hopefully motivate me to work on this post. I am submitting this list to Tackle It Tuesday.  I know the “tacklers” at 5 Minutes for Moms are great encouragers.
Please note that this is not a comprehensive list. I will keep on improving this post – links to the web, add photos and direction, etc.
